BRITT CONIDI - PhD Student Profile

Britt is currently a PhD student under the supervision of Professor Tim McCormack and Dr Jennifer Balint (Department of Criminology). She is a graduate of the Northern Territory University (now Charles Darwin University) and a Supreme Court Medal recipient (1998). Britt completed articles with the Northern Territory Attorney-General’s department and was associate to the retired Supreme Court judge, Justice Sir William Kearney. She has practised private and public law in Darwin, Alice Springs and Vanuatu, including legal work in Aboriginal family violence prevention. As an Australian Youth Ambassador for Develoment (2000) she worked for the State Law Office and the Office of the Public Prosecutor in the Republic of Vanuatu. Britt has also taught Property Law at the University of Melbourne.

Abstract of PhD Thesis
'Caught in the Cross-Fire: Can international criminal law create a space for the achievement of individual and societal reconciliation in post-atrocity societies?'
(expected completion date: June 2006)

The thesis is a comparative case study analysis of the influence of international criminal justice institutions in East Timor, Rwanda and Iraq. The thesis examines the role of international criminal law in situations where societies are coming to terms with the legacy of mass violence.


From February until May 2006 Britt will participate in a research exchange at the War Crimes Studies Center, University of California – Berkeley. During the 3 month exchange, Britt will continue with her PhD research and establish links with the War Crimes Studies Center and other US institutions with research interests similar to the Asia Pacific Centre for Military Law.
