Director General ADF Legal
Service and Senior Royal Australian Air Force Legal Officer.
The Director General is the head of
ADF Legal Service and is responsible for the provision of legal
advice and other legal services to the ADF, the Department of Defence
and the Minister on matters of law. DGADFLS manages resources for
ADF Legal Service throughout Australia and overseas
Biography
Air Commodore Simon Harvey joined the RAAF in Nov 1983 as a direct
entry legal officer. Prior to joining the RAAF, he worked in the
Office of the Special Prosecutor, the precursor organisation to
the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions. After his completion
of RAAF officer training in early 1984, AIRCDRE Harvey was posted
to a staff legal position within the Directorate of Air Force Legal
Services, located in Canberra. In 1985, he became the inaugural
Base Legal Officer for RAAF Williams, located in Melbourne. His
next posting was the Deputy Staff Officer Legal, RAAF Support Command.
Throughout the 1990's, AIRCDRE Harvey held a variety of staff legal
positions within the Directorate of Air Force Legal Services, most
notably in the areas of civil and administrative law. In mid 1991,
he commenced a two-year exchange with the USAF Judge Advocate General
Corps. Employed in the Pentagon, AIRCDRE Harvey worked in the area
of international and operations law.
After the Pentagon posting, AIRCDRE Harvey spent two years as a
senior staff officer in the Directorate of Discipline Law within
the tri-Service Defence Legal Office. His service staff training
includes Joint Services Staff College, completed in 1997. In 2000,
AIRCDRE Harvey was posted to the Directing Staff of the RAAF Staff
College and later in December 2000 promoted to Group Captain and
posted to the position of Director of Management - Air Force within
Air Force Headquarters. In 2001, he was posted to Director of Operations
and International Law within The Defence Legal Service.
On 25 Aug 2003, he was promoted to Air Commodore and appointed the
Director-General ADF Legal Service
