MATTHIAS VANHULLEBUSCH

Dr. Matthias Vanhullebusch is a visiting scholar at the APCML, Melbourne Law School, 01 February – 29 February 2020.

Dr. Matthias Vanhullebusch is the Chenxing Associate Professor and Executive Director of the Asian Law Center at the KoGuan School of Law of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2012. He has an expertise in international law with a regional focus on the Middle East and Asia. He publishes widely on these topics in the Chinese Journal of International Law, the Chinese Journal of International Politics, International Peacekeeping, the Journal of International Criminal Justice and the Journal of World Investment and Trade amongst other journals. His monographs include: War and Law in the Islamic World (Brill/Nijhoff, 2015) and Global Governance, Conflict and China (Brill/Nijhoff, 2018). At the Asia-Pacific Centre for Military Law, he will be working on his third monograph on The Law of International Humanitarian Relief

Dr. Vanhullebusch is also the Senior Managing Editor of the Asian Journal of Law and Society (Cambridge University Press), Editor-in-Chief of Brill’s Asian Law Series (Brill/Nijhoff) and the Routledge Studies on Asia in the World (Taylor & Francis), Associate Editor of the Asian Yearbook of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (Brill/Nijhoff) as well as a member of the Board of Experts of the Asia-Pacific Journal of International Humanitarian Law (ICRC). He has collaborated on various research projects at the Centre for Law and Conflict (School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London), the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (SOAS), the Committee on Islamic Law and International Law of the International Law Association (ILA), the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC), the Afghanistan Analysts Network and the International Society for Military Law and the Law of War. He is Co-Rapporteur of the ILA’s Study Group on Asian State Practice of Domestic Implementation of International Law. He is a Visiting Professor on various training programmes organised by the ICRC across Asia. He has been a Visiting Scholar at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (Summer 2018) and Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict (Summer 2019). He’ll be a Visiting Scholar at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law next Summer 2020. 

Matthias Vanhullebusch holds degrees in law from the University of London/SOAS (PhD, summa cum laude), the University of Leiden (LL.M. (Adv.)), the Université Libre de Bruxelles/Freie Universität Berlin/Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (LL.M.) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (LL.B.) as well as in international relations from CERIS/Université de Paris Sud-XI (MA, magna cum laude).
